Order of Service

ENTRANCE MUSIC: THE DAY THOU GAVEST

WORDS OF WELCOME
by Judith Dandy

We meet here today; family and friends, to remember, and to give thanks for the life of Robert David Greenwood: husband, brother, father, father-in-law, grandfather and friend.
We acknowledge that we are joined by family and friends who are unfortunately not able to be with us in person today but join us online, or remember us at this time in their home.
Robert was a devoted husband to Carol, loving father to Giles, Louisa and Verity, most kind father-in-law, an adoring grandfather, a special colleague, friend and neighbour.
As we recall the love that has been shared, we remember Robert with great happiness.

Pilgrim’s Progress
A poem written by Dad last year, read by Verity

When young they said he would go far,
As far as London some did suggest.
He thought the same and bought a car,
Not any car but of the best.
He knew where he was going.

All his happiest dreams came true,
A large house, wife, son and daughters two.
Grounds where grapes and apples grew
And friends came over just to view.
He knew what he was doing.

With sweat and toil how smart he became,
A genius, even, it was said.
But too much work can dull the brain
And too many thoughts can cram the head.
He’s not sure what he’s doing.

Now old and broken down with grief
And cancerous pains in the body rage,
He searches the Web for some relief,
Some antidote for his old age.
Does he know what he is doing?

When old they said he would go far,
To a star, perhaps, they did suggest.
But shed no tears for dear grandpa
He knows that he is blessed.
He knows where he is going.

The Very Good Place
Written and read by Louisa

Dad, as we celebrate your life lived on earth,
I know that you are now in a very good place.

A place where you can drive your e-type fast and park it easily, anywhere.
Where whisky only comes in single malt and cocktails are served for two to share.

A realm where cast iron hearths are aglow with warming fires.
Where monkey puzzle trees rise from gardens like heavenly spires.

Where all your sought for dreams have come true
and things you never thought to dream of, tickle you.

A place where, at last, you are reunited with Mum
and your joyous reunion settles into an eternal bliss.

Where your hand is always gently held
and your fears have flown in the comfort of her kiss.

MUSIC FOR REFLECTION: BE STILL, MY SOUL

Be still, my soul the Lord is on your side
bear patiently the cross of grief or pain
leave to thy God to order and provide
in ev'ry change He faithful will remain
Be still, my soul thy best, thy heav'nly Friend
through thorny ways leads to a joyful end

Be still, my soul when dearest friends depart
and all is darkened in the vale of tears
then shall you better know His love, His heart
who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds shall know
his voice who ruled them while He dwelt below

Be still, my soul the hour is hast'ning on
when we shall be forever with the Lord
when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone
sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored
Be still, my soul when change and tears are past
all safe and blessed we shall meet at last

FAREWELL

Father God, we give thanks to you for Robert’s life and all that he was to those here today. Thank you for all the love given by him, and the love received among family and friends. We pray now that all those who were close to Robert would now be close to one another and would be aware of your healing love.

Comfort all those who mourn; and help them to release Robert to you so that their grief may not be overwhelming, help them to find strength and peace in your love, and may they meet the days ahead with treasured memories of the past and hope for the future.

May they know the blessing of your son who said: ‘blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted.’ In the name of that son, Jesus, we pray.    Amen

COMMENDATION AND COMMITTAL

Today is not goodbye but simply farewell. Every morning has a new beginning, a new blessing, a new hope, so as we prepare to take our leave we send our love, our thoughts and prayers to go with Robert:

Robert….
Into the freedom of wind and sunshine
we let you go.
Into the dance of the stars and the planets
we let you go.
We love you, we miss you, we want you to be happy.

CLOSING BLESSING

There is no night without a dawning
No winter without a spring
And beyond the dark horizon
Our hearts will once more sing ….
For those who leave us for a while
Have only gone away
Out of a restless, care worn world
Into a brighter day
